Refuge Formula
Significance & Meaning
I take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha
The Tisarana or Triple Refuge is the foundational formula in all Buddhist traditions. By reciting these words, one formally becomes a Buddhist, taking refuge in the Three Jewels: the Buddha (the awakened one), the Dharma (the teachings), and the Sangha (the community of practitioners). This formula is recited daily by millions of Buddhists worldwide.
