The Sitatapatra Mantra invokes Dukar, the White Umbrella Goddess, one of the most powerful protection deities in Vajrayana Buddhism.
Meaning
- Om - Sacred universal syllable
- Sarva Tathagata - All the Tathagatas (Buddhas)
- Ushnisha - Crown protuberance (source of her emanation)
- Sitatapatre - "White Umbrella" (vocative)
- Hum - Seed syllable of protection
- Phat - Wrathful syllable that cuts through obstacles
Origin Story
According to the sutras, when Shakyamuni Buddha was teaching, the asura (demon) Rahu attacked the assembly. From the Buddha's ushnisha emerged Sitatapatra, who with her thousand arms and white umbrella completely protected all beings present.
