Mula Mantra
Significance & Meaning
Salutations to the Supreme Being who is existence, consciousness, and bliss - both masculine and feminine divine
The Mula Mantra
The Mula Mantra (also spelled Moola Mantra, meaning "root mantra") is a powerful invocation that addresses the ultimate reality in both its formless and personal aspects. It was popularized globally through the Oneness movement founded by Sri Amma Bhagavan.
Structure and Meaning
The mantra progresses from the abstract to the personal:
- Oṃ - The primordial sound, source of all creation
- Sat - Truth, pure existence, that which eternally is
- Cit - Consciousness, pure awareness
- Ānanda - Bliss, divine joy
- Parabrahma - The Supreme Creator, the absolute beyond all forms
- Puruṣottama - The Supreme Being (literally "best of persons"), a title of Vishnu
- Paramātmā - The Supreme Soul dwelling in all beings
- Śrī Bhagavatī Samethā - Together with the Divine Mother (feminine aspect)
- Śrī Bhagavate Namaḥ - Salutations to the Divine Lord
Significance
The Mula Mantra is notable for:
- Completeness: It invokes both the formless absolute (Sat-Cit-Ānanda) and the personal divine
- Balance: It honors both masculine (Bhagavate) and feminine (Bhagavatī) aspects of divinity
- Universality: While rooted in Hindu theology, its inclusive nature appeals to seekers of various backgrounds
Practice
The mantra is typically chanted 108 times using a mala (prayer beads). It is believed to:
- Invoke divine presence and grace
- Remove obstacles on the spiritual path
- Bring peace, clarity, and transformation
- Connect the practitioner with ultimate reality
