Invoking the fierce female protector of Tibet and the Dalai Lamas

The Palden Lhamo Mantra invokes Palden Lhamo (Shri Devi in Sanskrit), the only female among the Eight Dharmapalas and the special protector of Tibet, the Dalai Lamas, and Lhasa.

Meaning (Tibetan)

  • Jo Mo - "Lady/Queen"
  • Ral Chig Ma - "Single-braided one"
  • Dud Sol Ma - "Smoke offering goddess"
  • Nag Mo - "Dark/black one"
  • Tham Chad Dud Kyi Gyal Mo Che - "Great queen of all maras"

Her Story

According to legend, Palden Lhamo was originally married to a king of Lanka who persecuted Buddhism. When he refused to change despite her warnings, she killed her own son (whom the king was corrupting) and fled, vowing to protect the Dharma. This extreme act shows her complete dedication to the Buddhist teachings.

Practice

Traditionally invoked on the 15th and 29th lunar days. Offerings include strong tea, alcohol, and tormas (ritual cakes).
