The Kalachakra Mantra is the heart mantra of the Kalachakra Tantra, one of the most complex and profound tantric systems in Vajrayana Buddhism.

The Ten Syllables

The mantra contains the "Ten Powerful Syllables" often depicted in the famous Kalachakra monogram:

  • Om - Body of all Buddhas
  • Ham - Wisdom of enlightened mind
  • Ksha - Body, speech, mind of Kalachakra
  • Ma - Consort Vishvamata
  • La - Purified aggregates
  • Va - Elements purified
  • Ra - Subtle channels purified
  • Ya - Wisdom winds purified
  • Svaha - Establishing the accomplishment

The Kalachakra System

"Kalachakra" means "Wheel of Time." The system encompasses:

  • Outer Kalachakra - Cosmology, astronomy, astrology
  • Inner Kalachakra - Subtle body, chakras, energies
  • Alternative Kalachakra - The path of meditation and yoga

The Kalachakra Monogram

The ten syllables are often combined into a single intricate symbol called the "Tenfold Powerful One" (namchuwangden). This symbol is commonly displayed for protection and blessings.
